Things to Check for the Gay or Lesbian Traveller, Before You Set Off
Whilst much of the world has become more tolerant of gay and lesbian travel, attitudes towards homosexuality vary greatly from place to place. It is
suggested that you find out as much as possible about the laws and customs of your intended destination.
In some more conservative parts of the world, where same-sex relationships are frowned upon, local police forces have been known to carry out elaborate
entrapment schemes.
You would be well-advised to find out the age of consent in the country you’re looking to go to, as it can differ for heterosexual and same-sex relationships.
Check out our
Age of Consent guide for the major world areas.
Make sure you’re aware of any dos, don’ts and cultural taboos (such as public displays of affection by same-sex couples) without having to learn the hard
way by causing offence, scandal or even in some cases ending up in prison. If you’re not absolutely sure what may or may not be acceptable, discretion is obviously
the best policy.
