German Currency
![]() Credit Cards/Currency
The German Euro is approximately US$0.51129
The German Mark is approximately US$0.4425 - 2.4331 Germany Deutsche Marks per Euro
Exchange rate as at January 2003.
The major credit cards are becoming more widely accepted in many large shops, hotels and restaurants, although Germans prefer to carry cash. Travellers cheques
are best cashed at exchange bureaux, as banks often won't change them. The quickest and most convenient way to change money is to obtain cash from one of the ATM
machines.
Euro travellers cheques are widely accepted everywhere. It is advisable to take Euro travellers Cheques and Euro notes. Sterling travellers cheques are widely
accepted as are Visa, Diners, American Express and Master Charge credit cards.
The Deutsche Mark ceased to be legal tender immediately upon the introduction of the euro — in contrast to the other euro-zone nations, where the euro and legacy
currency circulated side by side for up to two months.
The Deutsche Bundesbank has guaranteed that all DM cash may be changed into euros indefinitely, and one may do so at any branch of the Bundesbank. As of 2006 there
are still promotions every now and then where Mark are accepted
in shops.
