The major areas visited by trekking groups are Chiang Dao, Wiang Papao, Phrao, Ngao, Mae Chan, Fang, Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son.

You should have a through understanding of the services the trekking company will provide before deciding to join a group organized by the company.
Some companies may encourage you to try a sample of opium, view a heroin caravan or make a side trip into Burma. These sound very exciting but any
of these can be very dangerous to you and you must remember that these are illegal undertakings. Use your common sense, don't take any unnecessary risks
thereby spoiling your holiday.
You can find out from the Tourist Police which areas have security problems. Keeping this information in mind, you will know what areas to avoid.
Under no circumstances should you go trekking by yourself without a guide because:
♦ You are not familiar with the terrain of the mountainous areas.
♦ Some groups of hill tribesmen do not reside in any specific area but move from place to place
♦ Some tribal villages do not welcome strangers and other still retain primitive beliefs and do not even allow themselves to be photographed.
