The country's official name was Siam when it was changed to Thailand. The word Thai is not, as commonly believed, derived from the word Tai meaning
"free" in the Thai language, it is, however, the name of an ethnic group from the central plains.

The Thai National Anthem 'Phleng Chat'
Words by: Luang Saranuprapan
Music by: Phra Jenduriyang
|
The current Thai anthem is actually the latest of many used in the history of the country, although few have enjoyed the longevity "Phleng Chat"
has.
The notion of a Thai (or Siamese, as Thailand was then known as Siam) anthem was first raised in 1871, when the king, upon visiting the British colony of
Singapore, noticed that the British had a national anthem, so one should be made for his country.
(A Salute to the Monarch) is actually still in use today as the royal anthem
