In 1940, Thailand moved its New Year's Day from April 13th to January 1st. The old New Year is still a holiday called Songkran. Years
are counted as the Buddhist era (B.E.) which started 543 years earlier than the Christian, era, therefore 2009 AD is the year 2553 BE.
Steeped in traditions, customs and a way of life preserved for generations, Thailand is renowned for its colourful festivals and pageantries. No less than
66 cultural religious events adorn the annual festival calendar. The greatest concentration of these comes in the cool season, from November through to February,
although there is normally something taking place throughout the year.
Songkran Festival
♦ January - Bar Sang Umbrella Fair, Chiang Mai.
♦ February - Chiang Mai flower festivals. Spectacular floats and parades.
♦ April - Songkran (water) festivals. To celebrate the old Thai New Year. A time of much festivity, especially in Chiang Mai. When one has the
freedom to throw water on anyone who is passing by! Pattaya festival.
♦ May - The Royal Ploughing ceremony at Boon Bong Fair (rocket) festivals.
♦ July - Asalaha Puja celebrates the start of Buddhist lent with candle-lit processions by full moon at every temple throughout Thailand.
♦ October - Kathin celebrates the end of the rainy season and Buddhist lent.
♦ Novermber - Probably the best of all festival months in Thailand. One of the most beautiful is Loy Krathong when candles and incense float on
banana leaf boats on rivers and canals everywhere. Also spectacular is the elephant round-up in Surin, North East Thailand. Both Kings and Queens birthdays on
5th December and 12th August.
