Credit Cards/Currency
Sterling travellers cheques are widely accepted as are Visa, Diners, American Express and Master Charge credit cards.
It is generally referred to as the dollar. Sterling travellers cheques are widely accepted as are all major credit cards. The unit of currency is the Malaysian Ringgit
which is divided into 100 sen. Currency notes are issued in denominations of M$1, M$5, M$10, M$20, M$50, M$100, M$500, M$1000. Coins are issued in 1 sen, 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen
and 50 sen. Coins of $1 denominations also exist and they are legal tender, but they are commemorative issues and are seldom seen in circulation.
Shopping.
Shopping hours are 10.00am - 10.00pm daily. English is widely spoken. A service charge is usually added to the bill.
There are modern multi-storey air conditioned shopping complexes, but the best bargains are to be had at the night markets. Local handicrafts such as Pewter, Batik Fabrics,
Songket (fabric woven with silver and gold thread), Wau (kites), Basket ware, Silverware and Pottery are the best buys. Bargaining is the norm in the night markets and up to 50%
can be obtained if you persevere.
