The City Province of Delhi
After the rise of the Delhi Sultanate, Delhi emerged as a major political, cultural and commercial city along the trade routes between northwest India and the Indo-Gangetic plains. It is the site of many ancient and medieval monuments, archaeological sites and remains.

Delhi has been the traditional capital of India since the ancient times of Mahabharat and was called Indraprashta. Although Calcutta was the capital until 1911 during British Rule. Delhi had served as the political and financial centre of several empires of ancient India, most notably of the Mughal Empire.
Over the millennia, Delhi is said to have been built and destroyed 11 times.
What to See
icon  The Red Fort (Lal Qila) - A brilliant red sandstone fort built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan [who also built Agra's Taj Mahal] as his ruling palace.
Humayun's Tomb in south Delhi - near Hazrat Nizamuddin station, is one of Delhi's two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Open daily from sunrise to sunset, entry is Rs.10/250 Indians/foreigners.
Qutub Complex - This Complex in Mehrauli, south Delhi, houses structures dating from the Slave Dynasty [1206-1290] and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Delhi's Monuments - Rajpath, Rajghat Memorial of Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru House 'Teen Murti Bhavan' and India Gate. This monument has been built as a memorial for the Indian soldiers who died in World War One.
