Credit Cards/Currency
Sterling travellers cheques are widely accepted as are Visa, Diners, American Express and Master Charge credit cards. Travel cheques are widely accepted and may
be changed at banks and larger hotels.
To avoid additional exchange rate charges. Travellers are advised to take traveller's cheques in US Dollars or Pounds Sterling. Some banks may refuse to change
certain brands of traveller's cheques which others exchange quite happily.
Currency can be changed at banks, airports or authorised money changers. It is illegal to exchange money through unauthorised money changers. US Dollars
and Pounds Sterling are the easiest currencies to exchange.
Food
Not every dish is curry nor is all food hot. Discovering the immense variety of Indian food
is one of the great pleasures in your visit. Each region has its own cuisine. Broadly speaking
meat dishes are more in common with the north such as Rogan Josh, Tandoori and Biriyani whilst
the South is noted for its vegetable curries which tend to be hot. By necessity eating is
part adventure, which should be treated with respect and at times a large glass of cool purified
water. Western food is available in all hotels.
Shopping
Being a developing country there is a wealth of objects made by hand or simple machine. Fabrics,
especially silk. carpets, clothes and handicrafts are best buys. A visit to a bazaar is a must
and bargaining is the norm.
