Ian Douglas Smith (born 1919) was the last white prime minister of Rhodesia before it became the independent nation of Zimbabwe.
In an effort to resist African majority rule, he led his extremist white government in a unilateral break with Great Britain and
declared Rhodesia a republic, the first such anti-British revolt since the American colonies declared their independence in 1776.

Credit Cards/Currency
Sterling travellers cheques are widely accepted as are Visa, Diners, American Express and Master Charge credit cards.
Tipping
Tips of 10% are usually expected by taxi drivers and at hotels. Service charge is often included in a bill, but when not, a 10% tip is acceptable.
Probably the best curios to buy in Zimbabwe are the stone carvings of the Shona people. It is probably better, to buy directly from the artists than
from the large roadside stalls, which are simply middlemen in the curio supply chain. Do take care to check the quality of the carving before you buy it.
You'll also find some excellent leather products and beadworks in Zimbabwe, especially in the market at Harare.
Currency Exchange:
Major foreign currencies can be exchanged at bureaux de change, banks and major hotels at the official exchange rate.
Credit/Debit Cards and ATMs
American Express, Diners Club and Visa are widely accepted, whilst MasterCard has more limited use. Some ATMs accept credit cards.
Traveller's Cheques
Banks and major hotels will exchange these. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take traveller's cheques in US
Dollars or Pounds Sterling.
Banking Hours
